OpenELEC 5.0 Beta 1 released with Kernel 3.17 & LibreSSL Package Support

OpenELEC and XBMC development team officially announces the release of OpenELEC 5.0 Beta 1 with new features under 5.0 series. This release also known as OpenELEC 4.95.1 which comes under OpenELEC 4.95 release series which is specifically designed as test releases for upcoming OpenELEC 5.0 release.

According to official announcement, OpenELEC 5.0 Beta 1 comes with updated Linux Kernel 3.17 series, switch from OpenSSL to LibreSSL following the heartbleed disclosure. The LibreSSL package includes better licensing and allows OpenELEC to be simplified by removing support for other cryptographic libraries such as GnuTLS. The main highlighted feature of OpenELEC 5.0 Beta 1 is the big switch from XBMC to Kodi branding. Well both project teams already conducted a major find/replace trial which illustrated newly added or removed features from this release. The name change affects more than the GUI; all references in code have been changed and in the OpenELEC filesystem /storage/.xbmc will be recreated as a symlink to /storage/.kodi to ensure hardcoded paths in addons or scripts continue to work.
