Linux Mint development team officially announces the release of stable Linux Mint 17.1 codenamed "Rebecca" MATE flavor for download and now available for testing purposes. As its name suggest that this contains MATE Destkop as its default Desktop Environment whereas it also available in Cinnamon Desktop flavor too.

According to official announcement, Linux Mint 17.1 "Rebecca" MATE comes with long term support which has active support till 2019. It comes with updated software and also brings refinements which allows its users to make their desktops even more comfortable to use. The main highlighted feature of this release includes support for Compiz program which is quite popular among Linux users.

The Mint 17.1 "Rebecca" MATE offers default two window managers named as: Marco and Compiz tool. Linux Mint development team officially announces the release of first major update of Linux Mint 17.1 "Qiana" which includes new and additional features for Update Manager. This update mainly includes enhanced Update Manager with new UI and other new features.

According to official announcement, the Linux Mint 17.1 Update Manager comes with redesigned kernel selection page. More text is added to give vulgarized yet pertinent information to users about the nature of bug fixes, security fixes and regressions and to details for each kernel, known fixes and known regressions.

The Linux Mint developers suggest that "the best solution is to apply updates and install newer kernels when you actually need it which is on a case by case basis and without taking unnecessary risks.Unlike other systems and distributions which recommend an “apply everything blindly” policy, we believe that decision can only be yours and for this reason information is key". Cinnamon developers officially announces the new update for Cinnamon 2.6 which comes with new features as well improved existing features. The main highlighted feature of Cinnamon 2.6 includes improved search providers, improved support for client-side-decorated windows, improved overlay when using media keys and improved tiling overlays and previews.

According to official announcement, the major update of Cinnamon 2.6 includes panel support for multiple monitors according to which you can add panels to multiple monitors and configure them individually. After upgrading, you will find a "Modify Panel" option through which you can easily configure the panel. Well as you know that the OEM images are especially designed for computer vendors and manufacturers. These OEM Images allows Linux Mint to be "pre-installed" on a machine which is then used by another person than the one who performed the installation.

The Linux Mint development team officially announces the release of better user interface of MDM setup tool for Linux Mint 17.1. Well the the user interface of MDM setup completely redesigned so that it will be more user friendly. The MDM setup is used to change the background of login screen.

According to official announcement, the new layout design of MDM setup for Linux Mint 17.1 is quite similar to mintDesktop with icons in the sidebar to access the different parts of the tool. The concept of "greeters" was confusing to users so it was replaced by a simpler theme selection.

All HTML and GDM based themes along with GTK greeter based themes are now available in the same list. This new redesigned MDM setup also includes addition of new button which is used to launch the login screen and thus quickly visualize the active theme.
