Linus Torvalds announces stable Kernel 3.16 & Opens Development for Kernel 3.17

Linus Torvalds officially announces the release of stable Linux Kernel 3.16 with new features and bug fixes of previous release candidates. As you know that Linux Kernel 3.16 is one of the smallest kernel till yet because of its small RCs as well as no major changes than previous stable releases. Most of upcoming distros are planning to includes 3.16 as their default kernel.

According to official announcement, Linus announces the release of stable Linux Kernel 3.16 with new changes. He also opens the doors for the development cycle of upcoming Linux Kernel 3.17 series. In his statement, he state that "And as usual (previous release being the exception) that means that the merge window for 3.17 is obviously open. And for the third time in a row, the timing sucks for me, as I have travel coming up the second week of the merge window. Many other core developers will be traveling too, since it's just before the kernel summit in Chicago".

He is hoping great development for next Kernel 3.17 series but because of Kernel summit in Chicago, it development might get delayed. About this, he state that "So we'll see how the next merge window goes, but I'm not going to worry about it overmuch. If I end up not having time to do all the merges, I might delay things into the week of the kernel summit, but I'll hope to get most of the big merging done this upcoming week before any travel takes place, so maybe it won't come to that. So this is just a heads-up that the merge window *might* be extended". Also, review recent Kernel News to know what is happening in Kernel world ?

If we compare this stable release with previously released Kernel 3.16 RC7 then this release contains fairly small stuff with one third architecture updates, one third drivers updates and one third misc updates. The architecture updates includes small ARM updates, some x86 Xen fixups and some random small powerpc things. You might also like to check out other latest Software News on our website.
