Linus Torvalds announces Kernel 3.16 RC4 with Fixes in Drivers & Filesystem


Linus Torvalds officially announces the release of Linux Kernel 3.16 RC4 with new changes and minor bug fixes, as it is the fourth release candidate under 3.16 series. According to Linus, this is the minor release so far under Kernel 3.16 series. Few days back, Linus announces Kernel 3.16 RC3 with driver updates and bug fixes, but this release is smaller than previous one.

According to official announcement, Linux Kernel 3.16 RC4 comes with minor changes in drivers which includes changes gpu, usb, scsi and sound drivers. Some of the changes made in filesystems such as fixing of issues of btrfs and ext4 filesystems. Apart from this, few updates are made in architecture which mainly includes updates in arm.

During the official release of 3.16 RC4, Linus charmingly make comment about this release. He said, "Things have calmed down nicely, and everything seems pretty normal. Maybe some of the calm has been due to people starting to take off for summer and (in the US) the 4th of July week, but whatever the reason, both the diffstat and the logs look nice and fairly small".

List of Bug Fixes Made in Linux Kernel 3.16 RC4

- iio: of_iio_channel_get_by_name() returns non-null pointers for error legs.
- drm/radeon: enable bapm by default on desktop TN/RL boards.
- drm/radeon: add a module parameter to control deep color support.
- usb: gadget: gr_udc: Fix check for invalid number of microframes.
- btrfs: dev replace should replace the sysfs entry.
- btrfs: create sprout should rename fsid on the sysfs as well.
- kernel/printk/printk.c: revert "printk: enable interrupts before calling console_trylock_for_printk()",
- nfs: fix nfs4d readlink truncated packet.
- usb: option: add/modify Olivetti Olicard modems.
- ARM: OMAP2+: drop unused function.
